Early yesterday morning teams from the sailing club’s around West Cork gathered in Baltimore to compete for the Marconi Cup trophies for 2019. After an initial postponement ashore waiting for breeze the sailors took to the water in topaz dinghies for the relay race. This was hotly contested with Glandore Harbour YC winning ahead of BSC 1 with Crookhaven Harbour SC 1 in third place.
Then the team racing part of the event was held under the watchful eye of Race Officer Tom Hegarty. It was great to see so many supporters and spectators along with the many sailors viewing the racing. By late afternoon the race management team had secured a series with the final between Crook 1 and BSC 1 initially postponed due to lack of breeze and then abandoned at the agreed time limit of 1700 hours.
Ashore the sailors were welcomed with crepes and Commodore Niall O’Neill thanked all the sailors for travelling and making it a great day afloat. He thanked the many volunteers who made the day possible and our sponsors Trag Ltd for the prizes. The Fair Sailing/Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded to Glandore Harbour Yacht Club. It was very tight at the top for the overall title but Crookhaven Harbour SC 1 won on countback from Baltimore 1. Well done and congratulations to Crookhaven Harbour Sailing Club – winners of this year’s Marconi Cup.
